Discover the world of ELKO
28.01.2011
“The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscape, but in having new eyes.” /Marcel Proust/
Discover and show the others something special about the surrounding environment: this was the main idea of the photo competition for the ELKO calendar 2011. Places, things, people and feelings within a country we live in or the countries we have visited.
The ELKO countries. Responsiveness during the competition was huge: more than 500 photos were received. We hope that both, the photographers and also our colleagues who voted for the 12 best photos to be included within the calendar, discover something new for themselves or were convinced yet again that there are so many beautiful and special occurrences right here-around us. You can be assured of it simply by looking at the photos gathered by the ELKO colleagues and by learning different facts about each ELKO country you may not have been familiar with before. We are grateful to all of ELKO who actively took part in the photo competition and also voted for the best pictures for this year’s ELKO calendar. The competition took place second year in a row, and it means we set a new yet a continuous tradition. With our minds set on fresh ideas for the ELKO calendar 2012 – we have saved a very special thanks to those who have shaped and given colour to this year’s calendar – authors of the photos: Jevgenijs Scolokovs, Jasmin Osana, Edgaras Korolkovas, Catalina Marinescu, Nenad Babic, Irena Stebej, Aleksej Mogutov, Julia Filimonova, Tomas Bartko, Elena Chekushina.
We also invite you to „Discover the world of ELKO!”

Paltinis - mountain resort in Carpathian Mountains. None brown bears (this time)
Rumania has the largest brown bear (urs brun) population within Europe (in the Carpathian Mountains), estimated at around 4500 to 5000 bears. You will not see them during the winter period when they are hibernating. However their sleep is not very deep, brown bears can be woken up easily… Photo: Catalina Marinescu (ELKOTech Romania, Sales Account Manager)

Triglav - the highest mountain in Slovenia
Slovenia's Mount Triglav is certainly one of the most desirable mountains to climb within the entire Alps! The first president of Slovenia, Milan Kucan, has said that it is an obligation of each Slovenian citizen to climb Triglav at least once in their lifetime. However, Slovenians seem to prefer team sports, with the most favourites being Football, Basketball, Ice Hockey and Handball. Photo: Jasmin Osana (ELKOTex Slovenia, Finance Director)

Capital of Lithuania:Vilnius. In the background:The Statue of Goddess Electra
In Lithuania March 25 is hold to be the Stork day (Gandro diena), since around this time all the storks return from their winter stay to their homeland. Presumably, the young Lithuanian women await impatiently for their return, as the Lithuanians have kept the tradition of a saying that storks bring babies. In Estonia around 5-20 new butterfly (liblikas) species have been discovered lately. Global warming is thought to be one of the reasons for an increase in these discoveries, however another theory is that these species have always been present yet simply undiscovered. Butterflies are usually captured at night as there are only 5% of all butterfly species flying at daytime. Photo: Aleksej Mogutov (Sales Office Estonia, Customer Manager)

The Curonian Dunes
The Curonian Dunes (Kuršių nerija) are the pearl of Lithuania. But don't try to find any pearls here; instead, if you are lucky enough, you may find amber washed ashore. Despite the fact that it is sometimes associated with a sad Lithuanian legend (amber is believed to be tears of the unfortunate Goddess Jurate over the loss of her lover), everyone who is lucky enough to find amber, experiences a moment of joy. In the photo: Lake Engures
Latvia not only has the sea, but also over 12 thousand rivers, as well as 2,256 lakes. Therefore it is only natural that fishing is very popular among Latvians. Methods of fishing varies from fishing in small boats, fishing on the shore or - in winter - under-ice fishing. Smoked fish (kupinata zivs) is not only a delicious meal, but the process of smoking is also a national pastime. According to statistics, the average consumption of fish-based products within Latvia in a year is about 20 kg per person. Photo: Jevgenijs Scolokovs (ELKO Group Headquarter, RMA Product Manager)

An old Ukrainian tradition: a suitor must visit the bride's home in order to propose. An affirmative answer is followed by a celebration, yet a pumpkin (garbuz) is handed to the unfortunate man if her answer is a "no". Photo: Elena Chekushina (ELKO Kiev, Sales and Product Manager)

Russia can be proud of its own “Venice” – St.Petersburg. There are 342 bridges of various sizes, styles and constructions, built in different periods of time, stretching across the city's canals and rivers. If combined together, the city's bridges would make around 16 kilometers in length. Photo: Jevgenijs Scolokovs (ELKO Group Headquarter, RMA Product Manager)
